How fine is the wine?

I like wine but I really only have a vague idea of what too buy when I look at the hundreds of choices offered by the stores local to me here San Francisco Bay Area. One of the sad and great things about wine is its vareity and general lack of consistancy, where as most things are stamped out of huge impersonal factories where 'the standard' is kept. Wine is at the whim of nature and the secrets of wineries to turn the best and the worst grapes into wines we all love and loath.
